National EMS Academy
Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) provide out-of-hospital emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical services (EMS) system, according to the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians.
EMTs have the basic knowledge and skills necessary to stabilize and safely transport patients, ranging from non-emergency and routine medical transports to life-threatening emergencies.
EMTs function as part of a comprehensive EMS response system under medical oversight. They perform interventions with the basic equipment typically found on an ambulance and act as a critical link between the scene of an emergency and the health care system.
Key skills and tasks performed by an EMT include (per the Cleveland Clinic):
- Respond to 911 calls and emergency scenes
- Assess a patient’s condition
- Provide basic medical care (e.g., CPR, oxygen, bandaging)
- Stabilize the patient and prepare them for transport
- Safely deliver the patient to a healthcare facility
Students in our EMT training will learn the following skills:
- Opening the airway and providing artificial ventilation
- Delivery of semi-automated defibrillation
- Controlling severe bleeding
- Dressing and bandaging wounds
- Splinting injured extremities
- Delivery and care of infants
- Emergency care for patients
- Communications and medical record-keeping
