Yes, you must have a high school diploma or GED/HiSET.
Tuition for the Louisiana EMT and Paramedic programs at the National EMS Academy typically costs $1,900. This cost may vary depending on the program, location and any applicable discounts or agreements.

You must be an EMT before applying to become a paramedic. To enroll in the paramedic program, you must:
- Be a nationally registered EMT in the State of Louisiana
- Complete an anatomy & physiology (A&P) course before starting paramedic training
A&P Course Options:
- SLCC offers A&P specifically for paramedic students
- You may also transfer A&P credits from other regionally accredited colleges or universities
- Transfer credits must be at least 4 credit hours

These programs are no longer eligible for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). However, there are other financial assistance options available such as:
- Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA): EMT students are encouraged to apply for WIOA funding, which provides financial support for workforce training.
- SLCC EMT Student Scholarships: Scholarships are available through South Louisiana Community College (SLCC) specifically for EMT students.
Students should contact their local Business and Career Solutions Center to ask about workforce aid available in their parish.

Average Paramedic Compensation

- The Louisiana EMT Program is 12 weeks long.
- The Anatomy & Physiology (A&P) program is one semester long and is required before starting the paramedic program.
- The Louisiana paramedic program is 12 months long and is for students who have already completed the A&P requirement.
No. You do not need placement scores, ACTs, or entrance exams to enroll in our programs. Our 12-week EMT program is designed to get you directly into the field, with graduates eligible for direct job placement at Acadian Ambulance Service.
VA benefits are not accepted for enrollment in the Louisiana EMT or Paramedic programs.
After completing either program, students must:
- Pass the NREMT exam (National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians)
- Obtain state certification or licensure in the state where they plan to work
Once certified, graduates can apply for EMT or paramedic positions. Many employers, including Acadian Ambulance, are actively hiring across Louisiana and neighboring states.
