Do I have to be an EMT prior to becoming a paramedic?2026-07-29T15:30:47-05:00

You must be an EMT before applying to become a paramedic. To enroll in the paramedic program, you must:

  • Be a nationally registered EMT in the State of Louisiana
  • Complete an anatomy & physiology (A&P) course before starting paramedic training

A&P Course Options:

  • SLCC offers A&P specifically for paramedic students
  • You may also transfer A&P credits from other regionally accredited colleges or universities
    • Transfer credits must be at least 4 credit hours

  • The Louisiana EMT Program is 12 weeks long.
  • The Anatomy & Physiology (A&P) program is one semester long and is required before starting the paramedic program. 
  • The Louisiana paramedic program is 12 months long and is for students who have already completed the A&P requirement.

No. You do not need placement scores, ACTs, or entrance exams to enroll in our programs. Our 12-week EMT program is designed to get you directly into the field, with graduates eligible for direct job placement at Acadian Ambulance Service.

Do EMT and paramedic programs accept VA Benefits?2026-07-29T15:28:41-05:00

VA benefits are not accepted for enrollment in the Louisiana EMT or Paramedic programs.

What is the job placement process after finishing the EMT or paramedic program?2026-07-29T15:34:00-05:00

After completing either program, students must:

  1. Pass the NREMT exam (National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians)
  2. Obtain state certification or licensure in the state where they plan to work
